Moody all-gray apartment is a softer take on Brutalism

The Perfect Storm apartment is the type of place that invites hunkering down, regardless of the weather. Designed with moody hues of gray, the Sydney home is cozy and modern, Brutalist and soft, all at once.

Designers at Australian studio Killing Matt Woods described the place as “intimate yet utilitarian,” and the description is apt. The home appears to be carved from marble and concrete, but in reality, its walls are the product of a clever paint job achieved with mottled gray paint.

The apartment stretches from the main floor up to a lofted second story in an open-plan layout. A series of soft curves forming the ceiling gives the space an appearance of having been carved from stone. At the center of the rounded ceiling, statement lighting made from two glowing concentric circles softly illuminates the room like a spaceship.

Though it’s compact, the apartment is filled with light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that allow plenty of sunshine in. To add to its quiet mood, the house is filled with warm details including soft gray marble countertops, plywood stairs, brass sconces, and a textured oak headboard-meets-storage space that frames the bed.
