At this point in the summer, the heat and bustle of cities can have us dreaming of a mountain getaway. And while a lakeside charmer would fit the bill, we’re also intrigued by a dreamy little cabin in the woods. Take this one-bedroom, one-bath stone house surrounded by trees.

The listing is located in Soda Springs, California, about 40 minutes from Lake Tahoe and under three hours from San Francisco. The 1,400-square-foot historic cabin was built by a Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) worker in the late 1920s or early 1930s with rocks quarried from the mountain behind the house. A mule pulled all of the stones to the site, and the home’s exposed beams were hand hewn from nearby trees.

The unique front door is from a gold rush-era building in nearby Downieville, California, the front windows came from an old garage, and the snow doors were sourced from a horse-drawn trolley in Sacramento. Other details include a built-in bookcase, spiral staircase, and an outdoor fireplace.

Skiing at Soda Springs Mountain Resort is minutes away, and you can enjoy the sounds of nature and a spring-fed brook on the property.

Ready to hunker down in this stone cabin? 50375 Hampshire Rocks Road is on the market for $542,000.
