1960s Airstream transformed into modern oasis

Blissful in blue

Here at Curbed, we’re fans of Airstream, whether it’s the company’s luxury-minded camper vans or their all new compact travel trailers. But we also love vintage Airstreams—like this midcentury version—especially when they’ve been gutted, scrubbed, and transformed into something beautiful and stylish. Love campers and trailers? Come join our community group.

And that’s just what Denver-based Colorado Caravan does. Husband and wife Patrick Neely and Kerri Cole rescue run-down Airstreams and breathe new life into them. We’ve covered their renovation of a 21-foot 1969 Globetrotter in the past, and today we’re loving their latest project: Margot.

Created for an international client who wanted a home-on-the-go when she and her son came back to the U.S. during the summer, Margot is a 1966 Airstream Safari. At just 22 feet, Margot needed a top-to-bottom gut and Colorado Caravan wanted to make the camper feel bright and airy despite its small footprint.

The renovated camper sleeps three comfortably in a full bed just to the right of the entrance and a twin bed in the back corner where part of the bathroom used to be. Both beds feature storage underneath and helpful reading lights for night-time wind downs.

The central part of the trailer boasts a kitchen with microwave, upper cabinets for storage, a stainless sink with pull-out faucet, and a double burner cooktop. Across from the cooking area, a custom table provides eating space for two and easily cleanable faux leather on the sofa. A compact bathroom rounds out the amenities, including a stainless steel sink, a custom stainless steel floor pan, blue penny tile, and a bi-fold door that maximizes space.

It’s all decked out in a blue and white color scheme. Indigo batik wallpaper contrasts with denim-like rollup shades and shibori pillows. Leather straps provide a nice accent, and the blue theme works well with the client’s 11-year-old son’s request for a Seahawks-themed bed.

The end result is a cheery mobile oasis that manages to balance an airy style with sleek, livable design. Love the look? Head over here for more info.
