Augmented reality app now lets you visualize Knoll furniture in your home

Decorating a home today is equal parts art and science. Sure, there’s still an element of instinct to the process, but much of the guesswork can also be eliminated thanks to technologies like augmented reality tools that show you how a piece will fit into a room with the tap of a button.

Knoll is the latest furniture brand to take advantage of the AR craze. The stalwart of modern furniture partnered with design software company Morpholio and AR visualization company Theia Interactive to bring its collection of high-design goods to Morpholio’s Board AR app. The new feature allows customers to envision how pieces like Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair or David Adjaye’s Washington Skeleton side chair will fit into their space.

Like Ikea’s Place app, Board renders Knoll’s inventory as 3D objects that are overlaid onto existing rooms where you can shift, move, and spin the furniture into place. Morphio says it paid special attention to the image quality, rendering minute details of a piece so people can zoom in on a fabric or metal.

Though the app is built for the lay design lover to use, it’s probably of particular interest to interior designers who can save pieces to room specific mood boards that can be instantly exported as cut sheets and furniture lists.

The app is currently available for the iPad with plans to roll it out to the iPhone soon.
