For many midcentury modern aficionados, there’s nothing more stylistically perfect than a 1950s or 60s time capsule. Unlike recently renovated midcentury homes, a time capsule hasn’t been touched—or tampered with, in some people’s opinions—by contemporary sensibilities.

The latest time capsule home to cross our desk is this three-bedroom, two-bath home in Hickory, a city about an hour northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina. Built in 1957 as the personal home of modernist North Carolina architect Jim Sherrill, the 1,595-square-foot cantilevered structure is a single level that “floats” over its basement.

Inside, exposed beams, a two-sided brick fireplace, and original partitions showcase untouched style. A wooden kitchen features original appliances and fixtures, as do two vintage bathrooms—one in pink (with an elevated tub for ease in bathing) and another in yellow and green. The bedrooms boast original wood built-ins, and the entire house is set on a forested 1.11-acre lot with double carport.
