Island beach home asking $4.8M was inspired by a shipwreck

Beach houses come in all shapes and sizes, and the latest to catch our eye is this four-bedroom, six-bath version in North Carolina. The 4,056-square-foot home is located on Figure Eight Island, an island not far from Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach that’s accessible only by a bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway.

The 1,300-acre island features just 475 homes and more than five miles of white, sandy beaches—an ideal set up for a getaway. And while some vacation retreats opt for quaint shutters and southern charm, this contemporary home—built in 2015—is inspired by ship building.

The design-build team of Tongue and Groove by Mark Batson report that on April 17, 1877, the John S. Lee lumber schooner was lost at sea. The remains of the old schooner were discovered just below the sand, and the new beach home took inspiration from the wreckage. Crafted from steel, concrete, and impact-rated glass, the home is made to weather hurricanes.

It was also designed to maximize views, situated on the dunes to offer unobstructed panoramas of the ocean. Inside, large windows and modern lines keep things fresh, with upgrades like wooden floors and a sleek kitchen. The yacht motif is most clear on the rooftop deck, where a bar in the shape of a boat opens up to a lounge and pool area. Ready for your own schooner turned luxury getaway? 521 Beach Road is on the market now for $4,850,000.
