LOCATION: Kent, Connecticut — At the edge of the Connecticut–New York border, about two hours north of New York City, Kent is a sleepy town of around 3,000 residents tucked into the Berkshire foothills (the area is especially alluring come fall-foliage season). Litchfield County’s 15 Gorham Road sits in the middle of the region’s agrarian glory, not far from the trails at Lake Waramaug State Park or the 250-foot waterfall at Kent Falls State Park. But while there are stone walls and red barns aplenty, you can also find shinier establishments downtown, including Ore Hill & Swyft, a fine-dining restaurant and pizzeria from James Beard Award–nominated chef Joel Viehland.

PRICE: $1,995,000

SPECS: 4 beds, 4 baths, 4,269 square feet, 10.84 acres — Rising among a grove of birch trees, this 2010 home designed by local architect Wes Wyrick blends a rustic timber frame with a crisp, minimalist interior. The main level is built for entertaining, with a spacious open-plan kitchen (complete with a marble-topped island and appliances from Wolf and Sub-Zero) and a two-story vaulted ceiling in the living room. Exposed dark wooden beams frame nearly every room, even in the bathrooms; the notable exception is the enclosed patio, where stone walls and timber ceilings create a warmer feel. Most of the bedrooms are located upstairs, and a walk-out lower level has a media room and gym area and features radiant-heat floors.
