The limited-edition MetroCard has become a New York City tradition, and so has the resale hype market that immediately follows. Last weekend, to commemorate what would have been the Notorious B.I.G.’s 50th birthday, the MTA released 50,000 commemorative MetroCards in three Bed-Stuy subway stations. People lined up for hours to snag one.
If you missed out, a bunch are up for sale on eBay. Most cards are in the ambitious but achievable range of $55 (“scratched”) to $75 (“Can be laminated upon request.”) A few entrepreneurial sellers are advertising that the card comes with free subway rides (each one required a two-fare minimum to purchase). But one intrepid seller is reaching for the stars, listing the MetroCard for $4,899, expedited shipping included.
