Cars Stuck

First it was the Ever Given, then it was the Ever Forward, and now it is the cars that have been stuck in a garage on East 187th Street ever since its car elevator went out in February. On Monday, a group of people (presumably all of them with cars in car jail) gathered outside the garage to protest. As captured by a News12 video, the chant of the day was “We want a car!”

The elevator has long been a problem — customers have filed complaints for years — but the issue came to a terrifying head this winter when, according to the Department of Buildings, the elevator fell down the shaft with a car and freight operator inside. Since then, the cars have been trapped on the upper floors. The parking garage’s owner said a new elevator will be installed within the next 30 days, “assuming the Buildings Department signs off on it.” That still seems like a long time to wait for your car after already waiting a long time for your car. “We’re stuck,” one driver said. “This is humiliating.”
