get out of town

Part of living in New York City is thinking about moving out of New York City. Each month, we’ll round up the best listings within commuting-ish distance, places where entire houses go for the cost of a “junior one-bedroom” (or less) but you’ll have to fix your own toilet.

You and a friend each get one cabin. Plus “hand-peeled” logs.

Rhinebeck, N.Y.

$945,000: four-bedroom, three-bath

The house is old, but the kitchen (marble countertops, new appliances) makes you feel rich. Photo: Upstate Down

A recent renovation by Upstate Down gives the space an old-farmhouse (lived-in wood floors) but rich (marble countertops, AGA induction stove) feel. A series of French doors connects airy room to airy room, and the bathroom has a terra-cotta-red tiled shower and claw-foot tub. Plus there’s a huge screened-in porch. It’s pricey, but so is Rhinebeck.

How do I get back to the city? It’s 15 minutes to the Rhinecliff Amtrak station.

So what do I do if I live there? Go to the Golden Russet café to eat a breakfast sandwich, or go see a movie at the cute local theater, Upstate Films.

Willow, N.Y.

$595,000: three-bedroom, two-bath

If you don’t get the cabin with the deck, at least you’ll have a screened-in porch, as seen in this listing photo. Photo: Halter Associates Realty Inc.

The only thing better than a cabin is two cabins. Do you have a friend? Here, you’re cabin neighbors. Each is equipped with a fireplace or wood stove, and each has a small but nicely appointed kitchen (former-Airbnb vibes). You’ll have to fight over who gets the one with the porch, but you’re friends — it’ll be fine! And it’s much, much, much more affordable than the $2 million mansion–tree house next door.

How do I get back to the city? If you don’t want to do the two-and-a-half-hour drive, just get yourself to Woodstock, which is 15 minutes away, and take the Trailways bus. Three hours later, you’re at beautiful Port Authority.

So what do I do if I live there? Go on your morning runs around the Ashokan Reservoir. Grab a coffee and hear the gossip at Bread Alone.

Kingston, N.Y.

$995,000: three-bedroom, three-bath

Two-story porch! Relax on any level you want. The 177-year-old house has an open feel with restored, wide-plank floors; exposed beams; and concrete countertops. It even comes with a walled-in garden, where you can start planting your own herbs and vegetables. Not cheap, but it has a lot more character than similarly priced homes nearby.

How do I get back to the city? Trailways bus from Kingston or drive two hours.

So what do I do if I live there? Stroll to Keegan Ales for a local pint, and do your food shopping in the best grocery store in the world (Adams Fairacre Farms).

Roxbury, N.Y.

$575,000: three-bedroom, two-bath

A Lincoln Logs cabin would not be complete without a log porch overlooking the mountains, as seen in this listing photo. Photo: The Catskill Dream Team

A “hand-peeled” log cabin — Lincoln-core turned all the way up. The home features a stone fireplace and two-car garage (also made of logs). The bathtub is inconveniently situated in the loft bedroom, but the cedar sauna in the basement makes up for it. The whole thing is rugged but not rugged somehow.

How do I get back to the city? It’s a three-hour drive.

So what do I do if I live there? Ski at Belleayre, and spend the rest of your time in your personal basement sauna.
